Whether it's a birthday, Christmas, Mother's Day or just an ordinary day of the week, my wife is an amazing mother and care-giver for our family. This post is for her.

She’s a GREAT mom. I can honestly say that many of the skills I have learned as a parent have come from her. In terms of parenting prospects, she’s like that scene from the movie Moneyball when the scouts are sitting with Billy Beane and his family. The head scout tells Billy’s parents there are 5 skills they look for in every player, and usually they find a player with 2 or 3. They work to develop the rest. Billy, however, had all 5. He was the complete package! When it comes to motherhood, my wife has more gifts than I could count. She’s the complete package, a great mother. Here are 6 reasons why that’s true:

  1. She is full of wisdom. My wife is the wisest person I know. I have always believed that. And as a mother, her wisdom is sharper than ever. There have been many situations where one of my children has had an issue or a struggle and she always has a way of speaking truth into their life in a unique way. In moments where discipline is needed, she wisely and fairly makes decisions and lays out consequences. I have stood amazed, many times, at how precisely she can do this.
  2. She is focused. Leading 8 children (6 of which live at home and are 12 and under) is not an easy task. Especially when they are all going different directions. Add to that the monumental task of keeping a home running and it’s completely overwhelming. As a stay-at-home mother my wife has the most important job in the world. And it’s also the hardest job in the world. But she never looses focus. Day after day, she stays focused on the task at hand. Through laundry, and homework, and doctors appointments, and play-dates, she doesn’t flinch. It’s truly a gift.
  3. She is loving. There have been countless times where she’s been screamed at, called names, told that she’s the “worst mom ever,” and while she remains firm and doesn’t allow this kind of behavior, she is loving and kind in return. She never hesitates to scoop one of her babies up in her arms and love on them, even after their wretched behavior. The hours of sleep she’s lost over getting up in the middle of the night with a screaming child has probably amounted to days, possibly years, by now. Yet I’ve watched, first hand, the loving way she cares for their needs, making sure they are comfortable and have everything they need. It takes a very special and selfless person to do this and my wife is that person through and through.
  4. She exemplifies Proverbs 31. I’m reminded always of this passage when I see the way she cares for our home. Not only is our home managed extremely well when it come to appointments, laundry, cleaning, cooking and school activities, but it’s also managed extremely well when it comes to its maintenance. If the water heater goes down my wife jumps online and Googles how to fix it. If a pipe breaks, she figures out how to repair it. A lot of men would be prideful and take it personally when their wives did things like this, but not me. I think it’s great. In Proverbs 31:16-19 it says She goes to inspect a field and buys it; with her earnings she plants a vineyard. She is energetic and strong, a hard worker. She makes sure her dealings are profitable; her lamp burns late into the night. Her hands are busy spinning thread, her fingers twisting fiber. The woman described in this passage is a leader. She’s strong, and handy, and takes the utmost care of her home. She doesn’t hesitate to use her skills to make sure her home and family function properly. That’s my wife.
  5. She is beautiful. She’s the most beautiful wife and mother in the world. She’s beautiful inside and out. Her heart is made of gold. Her spirit is warm, inviting and contagious. When is I see her in a crowd of people, she glows among them. She’s high class and also down to earth. She makes me laugh. Our children are the luckiest children on the planet to have such an amazing mother.
  6. She is the best coroner, medical examiner, doctor, chef, teacher, and district attorney in the land. Between removing the bodies of dead fish, surveying the scene of a dead rabbit our dogs killed in the yard, healing boo boos, preparing fantastic meals, teaching our children, and dropping the hammer when they screw up, she does it all, and she does it well!

She’s a GREAT mom. She’s the complete package. All 6!

Happy Mother’s Day, Kristin Berry!
